We know that teachers and students need the best tools to reach their literacy objectives, and we are passionate about providing access to texts, study guides and educational resources that may not be found anywhere else in audio format.
Our journey into providing educational audiobooks began with a pilot project involving 25 secondary schools in London and 100 individual members across the country. The results confirmed how important it is for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to have access to the same texts their peers are reading.
It is recognised that around 10% of the population have mild to severe difficulties with reading the written word. The three year pilot phase of Sound Learning showed pupils gained significant benefits from the use of alternative formats such as audiobooks. Incorporating audiobooks into your school offers opportunities for inclusive practice for children with SEND, by removing barriers to achievement, ensuring all children can access the curriculum and achieve literacy objectives.
Following the success of the Sound Learning initiative, we continue to extend and develop our service to schools by offering audiobooks that support those in primary education, right through to A-Level. We offer a wide range of titles that have cross-curricular appeal, including set texts, study and revision guides as well as numerous texts that inspire understanding and promote wider reading. Subjects covered include core areas such as Maths, English and Science, as well as PSHE and History, plus elective subjects such as Music, Psychology and Art History. All our audiobooks are either commercially sourced or recorded by professionally qualified actors and sound recording engineers. Many of the books accessible to members, such as CGP revision guides, are unavailable anywhere else in the audio format. Audiobooks make literature accessible and engaging, providing immersive learning and engagement that can be tailored to individual needs. Click here to view our range of titles for GCSE and A-Level.
Offering audiobooks in the classroom equips students to take ownership of their own education, whilst also providing an opportunity for teachers to measure impact and improvement. In addition, our digital service is easy to administer without the need for extra equipment. All our books can be played through a PC or Mac, or downloaded to portable devices such as an iPhone using the Libby app. Also, schools can give students access to thousands of newspapers, magazines and comic books, at no additional cost.
