Sally Green Interview: Half Bad, The Smoke Thieves, audiobooks and more!

May 21, 2018 0 Comments

Sally Green is the bestselling author of the Half Bad trilogy, where witches and humans live alongside each other. The Smoke Thieves is the first book in her new historical fantasy trilogy, which was published in May 2018.

She spoke to Abigail Jaggers about getting into writing, witches, audiobooks, and loads more! Listen to the highlights from the interview below:

Getting Into Writing:

"I studied sciences at school and didn't even think about being a writer!"

Planning a Trilogy:

"I knew very early on that I wanted to write a trilogy,"

Choosing a male protagonist:

"I was very conscious that my view of the witchy world was that it is a very female-dominated world,"

How did you choose what magical gifts to give each character?

"I did want to reflect their personalities to a certain extent..."

Did you know the ending to the trilogy before you started?

"I think that's what does worry me about quite a lot of teenage books - there is a lot of violence, and yet somehow they all live happily ever after!"

Why do you choose to include war in your books?

"I actually find it quite offensive when writers gloss over violence or make light of it,"

Do you like listening to audiobooks?

"If the narration is good it really does bring it to life. You can close your eyes and just listen and get lost in the story."

The narrator for the audiobook of Half Bad is amazing! Did you have any input in picking him?

"They sent me these reels which were very 'eee-by-gum' ish!"

What can you tell us about your new book, The Smoke Thieves?

"The very short summary is that it's Game of Thrones with teenagers!"

Thank you very much to Sally Green for speaking to us! You can find out more about The Smoke Thieves at her website!
