October 26, 2018 0 Comments

Looking for some spook-tacular scares? Want some listening that creeps it real? Or just searching a scary audiobook to trick or treat yo'self?

Audiobooks are the best way to immerse yourself in a thrilling story. A voice speaking straight into your ear is way scarier than reading. Even the shortest one can have me hiding under the duvet. So, if you love a creepy story, then check out this list of scary audiobooks for a fang-tastic fright!

Okay, I'll stop.

The Girl With All The Gifts - M. R. Carey

The Girl with All the Gifts audiobook by M R Carey
Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite. But they don't laugh. Melanie is a very special girl.

It's difficult to summarise this book without spoiling some of the plot revelations, so I won't. But the descriptions of the pathogen that has affected the dystopian UK landscape is creepy and Finty Williams' narration is haunting and eerie. This story will stay with you for a long time after you've finished listening.

The Woman in the Window - A. J. Finn

The Woman in the Window audiobook by A J Finn
It's been 10 months since Anna Fox last left her home, in which she has haunted the rooms of her old New York house like a ghost, lost in her memories, too terrified to step outside. Anna's lifeline to the real world is her window, where she sits day after day, watching her neighbours. When the Russells move in, Anna is instantly drawn to them. A picture-perfect family of three, they are an echo of the life that was once hers. But one evening, a frenzied scream rips across the silence, and Anna witnesses something no one was supposed to see.

Claustrophobic and atmospheric, this Hitchcockian psychological thriller will creep up on you.

The Exorcist - William Peter Blatty

The Exorcist audiobook
Father Karras is summoned to the victim of an apparent possession–a 12-year-old girl named Regan. Attempting to find a rational explanation for the girl's behaviour, Karras tries to talk to Regan, only to find himself locking horns with the demon inside her head. Its many voices mock him, tormenting him with his weakness, doubts and buried guilt. With his faith in God and humanity tested to the limit, Karras turns to the ultimate solution: exorcism...

Even if you've seen the film, this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation captures the psychological complexity of the original book, and is worth a listen.

Coraline - Neil Gaiman

Coraline audiobook by Neil Gaiman
In Coraline's family's new flat there's a locked door. On the other side is a brick wall—until Coraline unlocks the door . . . and finds a passage to another flat in another house just like her own. Only different. The food is better there. Books have pictures that writhe and crawl and shimmer. And there's another mother and father there who want Coraline to be their little girl. They want to change her and keep her with them. . . . Forever.

If you think children's books can't be scary, then this one will change your mind. Neil Gaiman reads the story perfectly, and the 'other' mother will scare you silly!

Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro

Never Let Me Go audiobook by Kazuo Ishiguro
Narrated by Kathy, now 31, Never Let Me Go dramatizes her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. A story of love, friendship, and memory, Never Let Me Go is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.

It’s very difficult to say anything more about the actual story without giving away the plot, but this audiobook is filled with a haunting, sinister atmosphere that makes it horrific without horror.

Carrie - Stephen King

Carrie audiobook by Stephen King read by Sissy Spacek

Carrie White is no ordinary girl. She has the gift of telekinesis. To be invited to Prom Night by Tommy Ross is a dream come true for her - the first step towards social acceptance by her high school colleagues. But events will take a decidedly macabre turn on that horrifying and endless night as she is forced to exercise her terrible gift on the town that mocks and loathes her . . .

This is another famous film adaptation, and this audiobook is read by Sissy Spacek who famously played Carrie, but the book goes into far more creepy depth and is a classic of the horror genre.

The Turn of the Screw - Henry James

The Turn of the Screw audiobook by Henry James
Perhaps the most brilliantly successful ghost story ever written, The Turn of the Screw creates a terrifyingly believable impression of innocent children so corrupted by evil that they remain deceptive pictures of innocent beauty. Their governess must struggle alone to confront and exorcise the demons which she believes possess their souls...

If you love Gothic fiction, then this is the audiobook for you. It will have you questioning everything - are there really ghosts? Are the children possessed, or is their governess just going mad?
